Living with Mourne Textiles
We’ve replenished our inventory of beautiful pillows and blankets from Irish weaving workshop Mourne Textiles and thought this would be a great opportunity to share with how we live with Mourne textiles in our own home and how the beautiful textures and colours, which are inspired by the landscape of Northern Ireland, add an incredible richness to modern homes.
I was first introduced to Mourne through Margaret Howell, who has been a long time champion of Mourne textiles selling their beautiful blankets and cushions through their Wigmore Street showroom. I remember seeing the incredible tapestries hanging on the wall and beautiful placemats and cushions for sale in their homeware section. At that point I had associated Mourne with the UK only, but the founder Gerd Hay-Edie is actually Norwegian and was a founder of Røros Tweed and the Norwegian Tapestry Yarn Company. Eventually, after a storied career as a weaver, she moved to Ireland in 1947 as a result of World War II and formally opened Mourne textiles at the age of forty, at first commissioning a local coffin maker to craft a loom tailored to her specific needs and eventually bringing in her looms from Norway to create the fundamental tools to make her now iconic weavings.
The history is incredible and too much for me to write here, so please follow the link below to learn the whole story.
