Introducing Liyang Zhang

We are excited to share a collection of new works by Toronto and Brooklyn based architect and ceramic artist Liyang Zhang. We continue to expand works from the extremely talented artisan and design community right here in Canada. We were mesmerized by these beautiful quarry cups with their delicate glazing and refined thrown bowl shapes on carved bases that remind me of the limestone Canadian shield.

Thrown on the wheel from a single mass of porcelain, the upper form emerges with precision. Over 72 hours to a week, depending on humidity, the clay slowly transitions from wet to leather-hard. During this interval, the bottom half is torn and chiseled, revealing the grain of the porcelain.

I love the Rabarbra vase by Anderssen & Voll with its mix of green and amber glass. it looks so beautiful on this wood burl stand and a single Hydrangea branch which has been in continuous bloom for the past two weeks.

A little collection of iPhone photos of the gardens we’ve been trying our best to weed and maintain during our time off. The meadow here will eventually have flowers and grasses above our heads later in the summer.
