Masahashi Ifuji Oval boxes made exclusively for Mjölk
Masahashi Ifuji lacquered shaker box inspired by a collection of three very rare oval boxes originally made by the Shaker community in Mt. Lebanon (c. 1830-1850). This unusual combination of black and red paint was used be the Shakers and inspired by the 19th century aesthetic movement commonly referred to as chinoiserie. These boxes were originally not intended to be used by the Shakers, but for sale to the "outside world".
The original boxes were exhibited at the exhibition Kindred Spirits held by the Mingei International Museum of World Folk Art which linked the aesthetic language of both Shaker and Japanese craft objects.
