Mjölk x Masashi Ifuji
Introducing exclusive Masahashi Ifuji boxes for Mjölk shop! These lacquered shaker boxes were made in reference to a collection of three very rare oval boxes made by the Shaker community in Mt. Lebanon (c. 1830-1850). The unusual combination of black and red paint was inspired by the 19th century aesthetic movement commonly referred to as Chinoiserie. These boxes were originally not intended to be used by the Shakers, but were instead for sale to the "outside world".

Ours are inspired by the set of boxes that were on display at the Kindred Spirits exhibition held by the Mingei International Museum of World Folk Art in 1995. The exhibit was curated by William Thrasher and aimed to showcase aesthetic language similarities of both Shaker and Japanese craft objects.

Make sure to read all about John and Juli’s visit to the Hancock Shaker Village in our most recent Mjölk Book: Volume 5 (pictured below).

A further reminder that other items by Masahashi Ifuji are also back in stock! Such as the Rinka Oval Tray pictured below.
