Ema is a self-taught ceramist based in Montreal. Her work is inspired by the organic forms and textures found in nature, particularly the smooth, rounded shapes of river stones.

Handbuilt slowly using traditional coil techniques and simple tools, each piece develops intuitively. She works with smoke-firing, an ancestral technique connected to her Mexican heritage, using materials such as wood, branches, and leaves to imprint the surface of the clay.

The firing process is integral to her practice. Rather than controlling every detail, Ema allows the fire and natural elements to shape the final result. Each firing is unpredictable, giving every piece its own unique character. Left unglazed, the pieces preserve the essence of something made directly from the earth.
