These stones are sometimes referred to as "scholar stones", as they were often collected and displayed on carved wood stands. Some stones were chosen with the aim to replicate landscapes like mountains and hills in miniature—in the same spirit as bonsai.

This particular stone was chosen for it's shape which is reminiscent of the special bag or sack carried by Daikoku-sama (god of the harvest) and Hotei-sama (god of good fortune), and is said to be filled with people's gratitude and compassion.
