Materiality Rice Straw with string reinforcement.
An original Rice Straw rain coat called "Mino" sourced from an old Japanese home in Nagano Prefecture. Straw was a preferred material for rain coats, as water would easily wick away from the fibre and they were also lightweight and made from a plentiful material. This one is an antique, but has been reinforced with a nylon string thread along the shoulder to ensure the longevity of the cape. However, we are recommending this for decorative use only.
These straws rain capes were documented in the incredible "Snow Country" series by photographer Kiichi Asano (1914-1993) who documented endangered culture and traditions in a post WW2 Japan.
