Colour & Materiality English Oak
This nest of rippled oak bowls comes from an English Oak tree that stood in the West Sussex countryside for over two centuries. The West Sussex countryside in the south east of England provides an ideal environment for long slow growth. The trees stand and endure swinging seasons but are somewhat sheltered from prevailing South Westerly winds by the rolling hills of the South Downs National Park.
The bowls have been turned on a traditional woodworking lathe then carved by hand with a small craving knife.
As oaks slowly grow their structures begin to support incredible weights. The weight of wood at the base of the tree or underneath large limbs can causes points of compression resulting in a ripple pattern within the grain. This subtle rippling effect can be seen at the base of these bowls as the ripples shimmer softly as they catch the light.
Colour and tones ebb and flow through mellow golden browns and warm oak hues into deeper browns and earthy notes. Within the dense grain patterning growth rings log decades of slow growth and medullary rays reflect bright flecks of light in the bottom of the bowls and follow meandering waves closer to the rim.
The bowls have been finished with a food safe hardwax-oil.
I like to let my wooden bowls age and wear naturally with use. These bowls can be cleaned carefully by hand with a damp cloth. The colour and finish will slowly mellow and can be restored at any time. Osmo Top Oil recommended.
