Iron Ink Seal
A cast iron ink seal with red cinnabar ink 6.2cm x 2cm
Manufactured in the city of Morioka in Iwate prefecture since the 17th century.
These ink seals are made from scrap iron.
After the casting in a terracotta and sand mold, the excess metal is removed and then the seals are heated at low temperature with charcoal to apply a coat of natural lacquer.
