Excavated Shoki-Imari Tea Bowl 1
Shoki-Imari Chawan excavated Chawan / Saga prefecture 1700s
An excavated Chawan bowl found as is.
There is a magic to the chaos of a wood-fired kiln. In this case multiple Chawan tea bowls fused together and once discovered by the potter the fragments were thrown outside the kiln into an open field. Centuries later these fragments have been excavated and through our appreciation of imperfect beauty these kiln rejects are now prized examples of originality.
They also become a rare example of early shoki-imari ware which is quite hard to come by.
